Postcard Mailer – Selecting the Right Sizes

postcard printing servicesDetermining the right size for a postcard mailer is balance between production cost, postage cost and getting the attention of a customer and/or prospective customer. Postcards are available both in standard sizes and custom sizes from various printing companies.

Cheap 4×6 Postcards

Full color 4×6 postcard printing services are really cheap and are the least expensive to mail with regular 1st class postage. The cardstock used for these cards only needs to be 7PT or better to meet USPS mailing requires and printing cost is lower because most printing companies can print a lot more cards on a press sheet. Typically 4×6 postcards are used for Business Reply Mailings, Save the Date, and Birthday Card Mailers to your customers. The only down side with this size card is it can potentially get “lost” behind all the other mail that is sent to a customer/prospect and on the mailing side you need a “clear whitespace” of 4”x2” located in bottom right. If you are mailing the cards yourself the postage will be $0.34 for regular 1st class. If you have more than 500 qualifying pieces and you can use a mailing company and you can decrease this cost considerably. The 1st class presort postage will be between $0.251 and $0.293 which is cheaper than 3rd class presort. (Note: The size of this card can be as small as 3 ½ x 5 and as large as 4 ¼ x 6 and still be consider a 4×6 postcard for postage.)

5×7 and 5 ½ x 8 ½ Postcards

These are the most popular size postcard mailers for a number of reasons (most importantly it stands out in the mail does not get lost behind those #10 envelopes). This size gives you plenty of room to clearly communicate your marketing and/or sales message. This is a great marketing piece for landscape companies, jewelry stores, asphalt paving or cement companies, restaurants, real estate marketing, liquor stores and any business doing a national mailing campaign. The cardstock needs to be at least a 9PT to meet US Postal requirements and can be done on glossy, matte or uncoated cover stock. Normally 5 ½ x 8 ½ and 5 x7 postcards are mailed through a mailhouse using 3rd class presort postage which will cost between $0.198 and $0.301 per piece for the postage. If your piece is time sensitive you will need to use 1st class presort postage which is between $0.381 and $0.435 per card. Printing costs will vary based on the quantity that you need printed.

Large Size 6 x 9 and 5.5 x 11 Postcards

This is a great marketing postcard size to make sure your sales or marketing promotion is seen by a customer or prospect. The cardstock thickness and postage rate is the same as a 5 ½ x 8 ½ post card. The 5.5 x 11 and 6 x9 postcards are used by car dealers, motorcycle dealers, lawn, realtors, garden stores and for national marketing campaigns. The actual printing companies cost is a bit more in comparison to 5.5×8.5 or 4×6.

8.5 x 11 and 9 x 12 Every Door Direct Postcards

With Every Door Direct (known as EDDM) one of the sides of the card needs to be larger than either 6 1/8” or 11 ½ “ to meet size requirements for the Every Door Direct program. The cover stock for this type of mailer needs to be 7PT or better. Many businesses will use this program to save money because they handle the mailing themselves and just use a printing company for the print production. This type of marketing postcard will get your business noticed. The big question is will it get you sales? The EDDM program does not allow you to do any kind of demographic information and the printing costs are much higher in comparison to a 4 x 6 or 5.5 x 8.5 post card. We recommend that you have a mailing services company (like EBA) do a cost benefit analysis for you to determine the total cost for your postcard printing services project.
